Katsina Government Empowers Over 1,000 Thugs With N252m To Become Self Reliant

A total of 1,016 youths, primarily political thugs from 361 political wards across 34 Local Government Areas of Katsina State, have been empowered with ₦252 million to help them become more productive and self-sufficient.

This empowerment initiative, launched by the Katsina State Enterprise Development Agency (KASEDA), is part of the Katsina Building Your Future Youth Development Programme.

Its goal is to remove youths from the streets and discourage begging across various state ministries, departments, and agencies.

The program took place on Tuesday at the Katsina Local Government Service Commission and was attended by heads of regulatory agencies such as the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA), the police, Hisbah Board, along with traditional and religious leaders.

Concerned about the rising issue of political thuggery in the state, the government has introduced this program to reverse the trend. Governor Dikko Radda emphasized that the N252 million allocated to support the 1,016 beneficiaries fulfills his campaign promises.

KASEDA Director General A’isha Malumfashi expressed hope that the initiative would lead to positive changes in the beneficiaries’ lives.

The state’s Commissioner for Youth and Sports Development, Zakari Shargalle, and the Commissioner for Internal Security and Home Affairs, Nasiru Danmusa, both called for collective efforts to empower the youth. Danmusa pointed out that with Nigeria’s population of 237 million people, 41 percent are children and 52 percent are young adults, and that 40 percent live below the poverty line—highlighting the importance of youth empowerment programs.

Governor Radda presented symbolic checks to some selected beneficiaries, including three men and two women.

To ensure the program’s success, strict monitoring measures have been set in place, with a clear warning that any beneficiary found begging at government offices will face serious consequences.
