Conditions To Be Met For The 31 Additional States Proposed By Reps Committee To Be Created

The House of Representatives Committee on the review of the 1999 Constitution has proposed the establishment of 31 new states in Nigeria.

Benjamin Kalu, the Deputy Speaker of the House, read the committee’s proposal during Thursday’s plenary.

If the proposal is approved, Nigeria’s number of states will increase to 67.

The proposal, as outlined in the committee’s letter, includes the creation of new states in various regions:

North-Central

  1. Benue Ala State (from Benue)
  2. Okun State (from Kogi)
  3. Okura State (from Kogi)
  4. Confluence State (from Kogi)
  5. Apa-Agba State (from Benue South Senatorial District)
  6. Apa State (from Benue)
  7. Federal Capital Territory, Abuja as a 37th state

North-East 8. Amana State (from Adamawa) 9. Katagum State (from Bauchi) 10. Savannah State (from Borno) 11. Muri State (from Taraba)

North-West 12. New Kaduna State and Gurara State (from Kaduna) 13. Tiga State (from Kano) 14. Kainji State (from Kebbi) 15. Ghari State (from Kano)

South-East 16. Etiti State (sixth state in South-East) 17. Adada State (from Enugu) 18. Urashi State (sixth state in South-East) 19. Orlu State (from South-East) 20. Aba State (from South-East)

South-South 21. Ogoja State (from Cross River) 22. Warri State (from Delta) 23. Bori State (from Rivers) 24. Obolo State (from Rivers and Akwa Ibom)

South-West 25. Toru-Ebe State (from Delta, Edo, and Ondo) 26. Ibadan State (from Oyo) 27. Lagoon State (from Lagos) 28. Ijebu State (from Ogun) 29. Lagoon State (from Lagos and Ogun) 30. Ibadan State (from Oyo) 31. Oke-Ogun and Ife-Ijesha States (from Ogun, Oyo, and Osun)

For the proposal to be realized, it must be approved by at least a third of the members of both the Senate and the House of Representatives, along with approval from the relevant state assemblies and local government councils.
