Shehu Sani Reacts To Reps Proposal For 31 New States

Shehu Sani, a former Senator for Kaduna Central, has criticized the proposal to create 31 additional states, adding to Nigeria’s existing 36 states.

The House of Representatives Constitution Review Committee suggested the creation of these 31 new states, as detailed in a letter presented during Thursday’s plenary by Deputy Speaker Benjamin Kalu, who was presiding in the absence of Speaker Tajudeen Abbas.

In response to the proposal, Sani took to his X page on Friday, calling it both ironic and comical, asserting that politicians simply want to create smaller regions for their own benefit.

He further argued that the country does not need new states, as many existing states rely heavily on federal allocations for their survival.

He wrote, “While many states are dependent on federal allocation for their survival, the House of Representatives proposal for 31 states is ironic and comical. Politicians just want to carve out mini colonies for themselves.”

The committee, led by Kalu, has proposed the creation of six new states in the North-Central, four in the North-East, five in the North-West, five in the South-South, and seven in the South-West.

Among the proposed states are Okun, Okura, and Confluence from Kogi; Benue Ala and Apa from Benue; FCT State; Amana from Adamawa; Katagum from Bauchi; Savannah from Borno; Muri from Taraba; New Kaduna and Gujarat from Kaduna; Tiga and Ari from Kano; Kainji from Kebbi; Etiti and Orashi from the South-East; Adada from Enugu; and Orlu and Aba.

Other proposed states include Ogoja from Cross River, Warri from Delta, Ori and Obolo from Rivers, Torumbe from Ondo, Ibadan from Oyo, Lagoon from Lagos, Ogun and Ijebu from Ogun, and Oke Ogun/Ijesha from Oyo, Ogun, and Osun States.
