Health Minister Andrew Gwynne has been dismissed following controversial comments made in a WhatsApp group.
Reports from the Daily Mail indicate that Mr. Gwynne made antisemitic remarks and “joked” about a pensioner constituent, expressing hope she would die before the next election.
In the WhatsApp chat, which included Labour councillors, party officials, and at least one other MP, Gwynne also made racist comments about Labour MP Diane Abbott and sexist remarks about Deputy Prime Minister Angela Rayner.
A government spokesperson stated, “The Prime Minister is committed to upholding high standards of conduct in public office and leading a government that serves working people. He will not hesitate to take action against any minister who fails to meet these standards, as seen in this case.”
A Labour spokesperson confirmed that Mr. Gwynne had been suspended from the Labour Party.
“We are investigating the comments made in this WhatsApp group according to the Labour Party’s rules and procedures,” they said. “Swift action will be taken if any individuals are found to have breached the high standards expected of Labour Party members.”
Mr. Gwynne expressed deep regret for his “badly misjudged comments” and apologized for any offense caused.
“I have dedicated my life to serving the Labour Party, and it was a great honor to be appointed as a minister by Keir Starmer. I fully understand the decisions made by the PM and the party, and while I am very saddened to be suspended, I will support them in any way I can.”
