āDonald Trump just announced that America will no longer give visas to Nigerians,āĀ reads a Facebook postĀ featuring a video originally from TikTok and published on 30 January 2025.
The video features US President Donald Trump speaking at a podium, accompanied by photos of both Trump and Nigerian President Bola Tinubu, as well as the flags of the two countries.
A visa is an official document issued by a countryās government, allowing a citizen of another country to enter, stay, or leave for a specific purpose and duration.
It is typically stamped in or attached to a passport. Individuals found without a visa in a foreign country could face legal repercussions.

Trump served as the president of the United States from 2017 to 2021.
He began his second term in January 2025, signing multiple executive orders that impacted immigration, climate change, and foreign aid.
An executive order is a legislative tool that permits a US president to issue legally binding directives to the federal government.
In part of the video, Trump appears to announce: āI am announcing a temporary policy shift, aimed at encouraging Nigerians, particularly those in critical professions, to stay, invest, and work in their homeland. As part of this, the US will limit certain visa approvals for Nigerian professionals, including doctors, nurses, engineers, and other key fields.ā
The video has been viewed over 39,000 times.
Africa Check has debunked several claims regarding Trumpās executive orders and their effects on African countries.

But did Trump say the US would no longer give out certain visas to Nigerians? We checked.
Manipulated video
Africa Check reviewed the US Federal Register, where presidential executive orders are published, and found no orders from President Trump halting visas to Nigerians.
The video also contains several inconsistencies, including a mismatch between the audio and Trumpās lip movements, which is a common sign of audio being overlaid onto a video.
Africa Check analyzed the video by breaking it into frames and using Google reverse image search.
This revealed multiple images of Trump on a podium with the same background and ultimately led to the discovery of the same video, originally posted on YouTube on November 6, 2024, showing Trump speaking after winning the election.
The images of Trump, Tinubu, and the flags were placed at the bottom of the altered video to conceal details that would reveal it as Trumpās victory speech.
In the original video, a blonde woman is seen applauding Trump on his right, and the arm and shoulder of what appears to be his wife, Melania Trump, are visible on his left.
These details were cropped out in the manipulated video.
To reduce the likelihood of social media users recognizing the video as altered, those spreading misinformation often crop, zoom out, or blur identifying details, making the video shorter to fit the false narrative.
This is a typical tactic for doctored videos.
In his actual speech on November 6, Trump made no reference to Nigeria and instead thanked his US supporters and voters.
At the time, he was still the president-elect and had not been inaugurated, so he had no authority to issue such orders.
