Ned Nwoko Gets New Appointment

Senator Godswill Akpabio, the President of the Senate, has appointed Senator Ned Nwoko (APC, Delta North) as the new Chairman of the Senate Ad-Hoc Committee investigating the turnaround maintenance of the nation’s refineries.

Senator Nwoko takes over from the late Senator Ifeanyi Ubah, who represented Anambra South and previously chaired the committee.

The Senate established the ad-hoc committee on October 24, 2023, in response to concerns about the large amounts of money spent on refinery maintenance despite the persistent dysfunction of the country’s refineries.

The committee’s task is to investigate the maintenance of the refineries and review all contracts related to their rehabilitation.

Upon his appointment, the late Senator Ifeanyi Ubah had committed to ensuring transparency, accountability, and thoroughness in the investigation, stating that the goal was to uncover any mismanagement, corruption, or inefficiency in the refinery maintenance process and contract awards.

He also highlighted the importance of conducting site visits, engaging with stakeholders, and gathering necessary information to make well-rounded recommendations to the Senate.

Senator Ubah expressed pride in his role as chairman and his commitment to conducting a fair and comprehensive investigation that would bring positive changes to the management of the country’s refineries.

The Senate aims for the committee’s findings to foster accountability and improvements in refinery management.
