Salisu Garba Koko, who represents the Besse/Maiyama Federal Constituency of Kebbi State, announced his defection from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to the All Progressives Congress (APC) in a letter addressed to the House, which was read aloud by Speaker Abbas Tajudeen.

In his letter, Koko cited the “protracted crisis” within the PDP as the main reason for his decision.

His defection comes just a day after another PDP member, Amos Gwamna Magaji from Kaduna State, also left the party, citing similar reasons.

House Minority Leader Kingsley Chinda opposed Koko’s move, rejecting the claim of a “protracted crisis” in the PDP.

He stated it was inaccurate for the defecting lawmaker to misrepresent the party’s situation, emphasizing that disagreements are common in political parties, and that both the APC and Labour Party (LP) are also facing internal conflicts.

Chinda called for the Speaker to declare Koko’s seat vacant in line with constitutional provisions.

However, the Speaker responded, clarifying that the House does not have the authority to declare a member’s seat vacant, as only the courts hold such power.
