APC Abruptly Closes Case At Edo Election Tribunal As Witnesses Confirm Over-Voting Again

In a surprising turn of events, the All Progressives Congress (APC) unexpectedly ended its defense at the Edo State Election Petition Tribunal today, despite having previously committed to presenting 24 additional witnesses.

This sudden move came after a series of damaging admissions from the APC’s own witnesses during cross-examination yesterday.

They acknowledged instances of over-voting and widespread violations of the Electoral Act by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) in the polling units contested by the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).

The courtroom scene intensified when Ferdinand Orbih (SAN), lead counsel for the APC, pointed out the APC’s failure to bring forward more witnesses, explaining it was due to crucial documents still being awaited from Benin City.

His comment sparked laughter in the courtroom, but he emphasized that without these documents, the APC had no choice but to close its case.

Faced with no clear way forward, the APC’s legal team formally requested to end their defense, effectively conceding that additional testimony would not bolster their case.

The court granted the APC’s request for closure and set a three-day deadline for each respondent to file their final written submissions.

The PDP was given 15 days to respond to INEC, Sen. Okpebholo, and the APC.

Final addresses will be presented on March 3, 2025.

With the defense now concluded, the tribunal will proceed to final arguments and legal submissions from all parties.

Given the substantial evidence, including the APC’s own witnesses admitting to electoral misconduct, the stage is now set for a significant legal decision.

This will likely pave the way for an appeal to the Supreme Court, where a final ruling on the disputed election will be made.
