Edo Assembly Approves Death Sentence For Kidnapping

On Tuesday, the Edo House of Assembly passed the 2025 State Kidnapping Prohibition Law, which includes the death penalty for offenders.

The motion to consider the bill clause-by-clause was initially moved by the Majority Leader, Charity Aiguobarueghian, and seconded by the Minority Leader, Henry Okaka, representing Owan East.

During the review, the lawmakers amended the 2013 law, which previously stipulated life imprisonment and the confiscation of property linked to kidnapping.

The new amendment introduces the death penalty for offenders and mandates the confiscation of property used in the crime.

Additionally, the House passed a bill to repeal the 2022 Edo State Electricity Law, establish the Edo State Electricity Market, the Edo State Electricity Regulatory Commission, and the Edo Electrification Agency.

The House also confirmed Mrs. Kenny Okojie as the Chairperson of the Governing Board for the Edo State Primary Healthcare Development Agency.
