State ASUU Begins Indefinite Strike

The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU), Kaduna State University (KASU) branch, has declared an indefinite strike starting from February 18 due to unresolved welfare issues.

The union made the announcement in a statement signed by its Chairman, Dr. Peter Adamu, and Secretary, Dr. Peter Waziri, which was shared with the News Agency of Nigeria in Kaduna on Tuesday.

The statement explained that the decision to strike was approved by the union’s National Executive Council.

“The Academic Staff Union of Universities, KASU branch, wishes to inform the public that its National Executive Council has approved the request from the branch congress to embark on a total, comprehensive, and indefinite strike starting today, February 18, 2025.

“Congress unanimously rejected the promises made by the Kaduna State government, citing the lack of substance, clear details, and specific timelines regarding the payment of outstanding entitlements,” the statement read.

Among the unresolved welfare concerns highlighted by the union were the non-payment of withheld salaries, including 60 percent owed since September 2017, as well as from May to September 2022.

Other issues included the non-payment of Earned Academic Allowances since 2016, promotion arrears, and allowances for supervising the Students’ Industrial Work Experience Scheme.

The union also mentioned unresolved matters such as Group Life Assurance for deceased members, the non-remittance of pension contributions from 2009 to 2019, and the implementation of 25 percent and 35 percent wage awards.

Additionally, the union raised concerns over the restoration of the university’s autonomy.
