Abiola Won June 12 Election – IBB

Former Military President Ibrahim Badamasi Babangida (IBB) has confirmed that the late Basorun Moshood Kashimawo Olawale (MKO) Abiola won the June 12, 1993 presidential election.

The June 12 election has been a subject of much debate, with various parties offering differing accounts of the events.

However, in his autobiography titled *A Journey in Service*, launched in Abuja on Thursday, the former President expressed his firm belief that Abiola was indeed the winner.

This statement was revealed by Prof. Yemi Osinbajo, Nigeria’s former Vice President, who reviewed the book.

Osinbajo said: “He also answers the question whether Abiola actually won the June 12 election, and I quote him, ‘although I am on record to have stated after the election that Abiola may not have won the election, upon deeper reflection and a closer examination of all available facts, particularly the detailed election results, which are published as an appendix to this book, there was no doubt that MKO Abiola won the June 12 elections.”

The former Vice-President quoted IBB as saying that, if given another opportunity, he would have handled the events surrounding the June 12 election differently.

In that election, MKO Abiola, the candidate of the Social Democratic Party (SDP), faced off against Bashir Tofa of the National Republican Convention (NRC).

The election, widely regarded as Nigeria’s freest, was interrupted when the military regime ordered the National Electoral Commission (NEC), led by the late Professor Humphrey Nwosu, to stop the results from being announced.

In his book, Babangida expressed satisfaction that former President Muhammadu Buhari had recognized Abiola’s contributions and honored him with the highest national award, Grand Commander of the Federal Republic (GCFR).
