Adeleke Takes Decision On Osun LG Election After AGF’s Appeal

Osun State Governor, Ademola Adeleke, has maintained that the local government elections set for Saturday will go ahead as scheduled, despite a request from the Attorney-General of the Federation and Minister of Justice, Lateef Fagbemi, to postpone the elections.

In a statement on Friday, Adeleke’s spokesperson, Olawale Rasheed, stressed that democracy is governed by the rule of law, and no one has the power to overrule the decisions of the courts.

“My advice to all parties, including local and national stakeholders, is to abide by democratic norms.

“As for me and my people, we stand by the rule of law, not illegal self-help. Election is going to hold, and the outcome will be a fast-tracked development at the local level. I urge our people to remain peaceful. Osun is a truly peaceful state,” the statement read.

In a statement on Thursday, the Attorney-General of the Federation (AGF) urged Governor Adeleke to direct the Osun State Independent Electoral Commission to suspend the upcoming election, warning that proceeding with it would be unconstitutional and invalid.

Fagbemi cited the recent Court of Appeal ruling in Akure, which overturned a previous Federal High Court decision that had annulled the local government elections held under former Governor Adegboyega Oyetola. The ruling reinstated the ousted council chairmen, whose tenure, according to the AGF, remains valid until October 2025.

The AGF argued that any election held would be invalid, as the terms of office of the reinstated officials would continue until October 2025. He also emphasized that such an election would be a serious breach of the Constitution, which Governor Adeleke is committed to upholding.

Fagbemi further warned against actions that could lead to violence and urged Adeleke to uphold the rule of law and ensure peace in the state.
