Tinubu Reacts As Babangida Admits Abiola Won 1993 Presidential Election

On Thursday in Abuja, President Bola Tinubu praised former President Ibrahim Babangida for demonstrating remarkable courage and patriotism by acknowledging that late M.K.O. Abiola won the June 12, 1993, election.

As the Special Guest of Honour at the launch of Babangida’s autobiography, *A Journey in Service*, and the fundraising for the IBB Presidential Library Project, President Tinubu commended the former leader’s significant contribution to the nation’s history and progress.

For the first time in 32 years, Babangida confirmed that Abiola had won the historic June 12 election, according to the collated results.

The annulment of the election marked a pivotal moment in Nigeria’s democratic history, triggering a political crisis and speeding up Babangida’s departure from office.

President Tinubu emphasized that Babangida’s acknowledgment of Abiola’s victory would help to clarify and correct the historical record.

“I am glad about the revelation of June 12. My General, we will not forget to pray for you. I listened to you carefully. I am not here to read a speech. I am here to pay homage.

“Let me say thank you for everything, for who you are, what you are, and how you have contributed to the history of this great country,’’ he said.

Mr Babangida served as Nigeria’s leader from August 1985 to August 1993.
