Senate Takes Strong Action On Natasha Over Seating Arrangement Dispute

The Senate has unanimously decided to refer Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan to the Committee on Ethics, Privileges, and Public Petitions for disciplinary review following a recent dispute over seating arrangements.

The committee, led by Senator Neda Imaseun, has been given two weeks to investigate and report its findings.

The decision came after a voice vote revisiting the altercation between Akpoti-Uduaghan and the Senate leadership regarding seat allocation, with lawmakers emphasizing the need to uphold parliamentary rules and decorum.

Senate spokesperson, Senator Yemi Adaramodu, raised a motion under Order 1(b) and 10, condemning Akpoti-Uduaghan’s “extreme intransigence” during the February 20 Senate session.

He noted that the controversy had dominated media discussions and stressed that the Senate should be a platform for lawmaking and oversight, not content creation. He urged leadership to enforce discipline, asserting that “where there is sin, there must be a penalty.”

Supporting Adaramodu, Senate Leader Senator Opeyemi Bamidele reaffirmed the Senate’s commitment to its rules and internal order, emphasizing that integrity was non-negotiable.

He dismissed claims that the dispute was rooted in gender bias, citing examples of senior senators who had accepted seat changes without issue.

In response, Senate President Godswill Akpabio directed the Ethics and Privileges Committee to review the incident and report back.

He pointed out that while senators are allowed to sit anywhere, contributions must be made from designated seats, suggesting that Akpoti-Uduaghan’s unfamiliarity with Senate procedures may have contributed to the altercation.

Referring to Order 66(2) and Section 55 of Senate rules, Akpabio stressed that all senators must maintain decorum, including prohibitions on chewing gum, drinking water, or being disruptive during sessions.

He also reminded members that the rules empower the Senate President to suspend a senator for at least 14 days for any infractions.
