APC Announces Zone To Produce Next National Chairman

The National Executive Committee (NEC) of the All Progressives Congress (APC) has officially zoned the party’s national chairmanship position to the North-West geopolitical zone.

This was announced by the APC’s National Publicity Secretary, Felix Morka, shortly after the NEC meeting held on Wednesday at the party’s National Secretariat in Abuja.

According to Morka, the decision was made during the meeting presided over by President Bola Tinubu and APC National Chairman, Abdullahi Ganduje.

In August 2023, Ganduje was appointed as the APC chairman by the National Working Committee (NWC) following the resignation of Abdullahi Adamu in July 2023.

Adamu, who hails from Nasarawa State (North-Central zone), had assumed the chairmanship role in 2022 and was expected to serve until 2026 before stepping down. In contrast, Ganduje, who succeeded him, is from Kano State (North-West zone).

NEC’s decision to zone the chairmanship position to the North-West is seen by many as a confirmation of Ganduje’s leadership.

It may also put an end to the demands from North-Central APC members who have been advocating for the return of the position to their zone.

Under the APC’s current power-sharing arrangement, the North-West now officially holds three key positions:
– Speaker of the House of Representatives
– Deputy Senate President
– National Chairman

Meanwhile, other top positions in the government are distributed as follows:
– President Bola Tinubu – South-West
– Vice President Kashim Shettima – North-East
– Senate President Godswill Akpabio – South-South
– Deputy Speaker – South-East
– Secretary to the Government of the Federation (SGF) George Akume – North-Central

Past APC Chairmen by Geopolitical Zone:
– Bisi Akande (South-West) – 2013 to 2014
– John Odigie-Oyegun (South-South) – 2014 to 2018
– Adams Oshiomhole (South-South) – 2018 to 2020 (removed due to internal party conflicts in Edo State)
– Mala Buni (North-East) – 2020 to 2022 (served as caretaker chairman)
– Abdullahi Adamu (North-Central) – 2022 to 2023 (resigned in 2023)
– Abdullahi Ganduje (North-West) – 2023 to present

With this latest zoning decision, Ganduje’s position as chairman appears further solidified, despite previous concerns over regional balancing within the party.
