Nigerian football icon, Jay-Jay Okocha, has slammed former Liverpool defender Jamie Carragher for his comments about the Africa Cup of Nations, implying that Carragher lacks appreciation for African football.
Okocha, speaking in an interview circulating X on Friday, said, “There are some players that will say something, you just overlook it. If you look at their career, if you look at the type of football that they played, you can understand. I mean, you wouldn’t want your son to be like Carragher. So, he can never appreciate African football or the talents that come from Africa.”

Okocha’s remarks come amid widespread criticism of Jamie Carragher, who downplayed the significance of the Africa Cup of Nations during a Sky Sports discussion on Sunday, February 23.
The conversation, featuring former England internationals Micah Richards, Daniel Sturridge, Roy Keane, and Carragher, centered on Mohamed Salah’s chances of winning the 2025 Ballon d’Or.
Carragher suggested that Salah’s failure to win “major tournaments” could weaken his chances of securing the award, despite the Egyptian reaching the AFCON final in 2017 and 2021.
Richards and Sturridge immediately pushed back, emphasizing AFCON’s importance.
Carragher’s remarks triggered a backlash on social media, with many accusing him of disregarding Africa’s most prestigious football competition.
