Rivers Government Reacts To Supreme Court Judgment

The Rivers State Government has stated that it is awaiting a detailed briefing on the implications of the Supreme Court’s ruling concerning state allocation and local government administration.

In a statement on Friday, the Commissioner for Information, Joe Johnson, said the government would carefully evaluate the situation once it receives comprehensive information before determining the best course of action for the state and its residents.

He called on the people of Rivers State to remain calm, law-abiding, and focused on their daily activities while the government seeks further clarification on the judgment.

Johnson also clarified that the issue of the 27 lawmakers’ defection was not part of the Supreme Court case, as it is still pending before the Federal High Court in Port Harcourt.

“At this time, we are awaiting a detailed briefing on the implications of the judgment. We will carefully evaluate the situation and determine the next steps to take in the best interest of Rivers State and its people,” the commissioner said.

He stressed that, in this context, Martin Amaewhule and the 26 others were still regarded as lawmakers in the Justices’ view.

“Since the issue of defection wasn’t on the table before the learned Justices, in their eyes, Amaewhule and the 26 others are still operating as lawmakers until that matter comes before them,” he said.

The commissioner reiterated the Rivers State Government’s dedication to upholding the rule of law and safeguarding the state’s best interests in all affairs.

In its ruling on Friday, the Supreme Court also prohibited the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN), the Accountant General of the Federation, and other relevant agencies from disbursing funds to the Rivers State Government until it complies with court orders, which the court described as being blatantly ignored.
