President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has conveyed his heartfelt condolences to the family of Mrs. Adenike Ebunoluwa Oyagbola, a renowned educationist and diplomat, who was Nigeria’s first female minister of cabinet rank. Mrs. Oyagbola passed away at the age of 94.
He also expressed sympathy to the government and people of Ogun State for the loss of their distinguished daughter.
In a statement issued on Sunday by Bayo Onanuga, the President’s Special Adviser on Information and Strategy, Tinubu paid tribute to Oyagbola, calling her “a trailblazer and a source of inspiration for women in Nigeria.”

He noted her groundbreaking role in breaking barriers for women in leadership positions.
“As the country’s first female cabinet minister, she shattered obstacles and paved the way for many women to aspire to and attain leadership roles in Nigeria,” Tinubu remarked, highlighting her pioneering spirit.
Oyagbola served as the Minister of National Planning from 1979 to 1983, where she played an instrumental role in the execution of Nigeria’s Fourth Development Plan.
Tinubu praised her “remarkable contributions to the nation’s development,” noting that her work helped lay the groundwork for the country’s continued growth and progress.
He also acknowledged her lasting influence on youth development, empowerment, and the promotion of arts and culture.
“Mrs. Oyagbola’s dedication to youth empowerment, development, and the arts has left an unforgettable impact on our nation,” Tinubu stated. “Her legacy will continue to inspire future generations, especially within the creative industry, where her influence is still strongly felt.”
Reflecting on her integrity, the President said, “In a time when ethical standards are increasingly under threat, we will miss Mrs. Oyagbola’s unwavering commitment to these values. Our nation honors her place in its history, and her absence will be deeply felt.”
