Court Stops Senate From Probing Natasha

A Federal High Court in Abuja has issued an injunction preventing the Senate Committee on Ethics, Privileges, and Public Petitions from proceeding with a disciplinary hearing against Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan, who represents Kogi Central.

The court’s ruling was made on Tuesday by Judge Obiora Egwuatu, following an ex parte application submitted by Akpoti-Uduaghan’s legal team.

The incident that led to the Senate’s action occurred on February 20, when Akpoti-Uduaghan had a confrontation with Senate President Godswill Akpabio over seat allocation.

She refused to accept her assigned seat, disregarded Akpabio’s directive, and repeatedly raised points of order even after being overruled.

Senator Yemi Adaramodu, representing Ekiti South, noted that the incident had damaged the Senate’s reputation. He mentioned that efforts to clarify the Senate’s stance had failed, as the public had already formed an opinion based on Akpoti-Uduaghan’s actions.

In response, the Senate referred Akpoti-Uduaghan to the Ethics Committee for disciplinary review during last Tuesday’s plenary, after considering and adopting a report presented by Adaramodu.

The Senate unanimously voted to send the matter to the committee following a voice vote by Akpabio. The Senate President instructed the committee to investigate the incident and report its findings back to the chamber.
