Rivers Assembly Summons State Independent Electoral Commission Chairman Over LG Election

The Rivers State House of Assembly has issued a strong warning to Justice Adolphus Enebeli (rtd), Chairman of the Rivers State Independent Electoral Commission (RSIEC), threatening to arrest him if he fails to appear before the House by Friday, March 7, 2025.

This action followed a motion introduced by Enemi George, a member representing Asari-Toru Constituency 2, during Wednesday’s plenary session.

Enebeli had previously scheduled a new Local Government (LG) election for August 9, 2025, after the Supreme Court annulled the October 5, 2024, LG poll in the state.

The Assembly, led by Speaker Martins Amaewhule, announced it would investigate the conduct of the RSIEC Chairman in relation to the annulled election.

On Sunday, Rivers State Governor Siminalayi Fubara assured the people of the state that his administration would fully implement the Supreme Court’s ruling, after reviewing its Certified True Copy (CTC).

In a broadcast, Fubara explained that his legal team expected to receive the CTC by Friday, March 7, 2025, and emphasized his government’s commitment to following constitutional principles and acting within the law.

Governor Fubara also directed the Heads of Local Government Administration (HLGAs) to take immediate control of the 23 local government councils in the state, following the Supreme Court’s annulment of the October 5, 2023, local government elections.

He stated that civil servants would oversee operations until the RSIEC conducts fresh elections.

In a separate ruling, the Supreme Court barred the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN), the Accountant General of the Federation, and other agencies from releasing funds to the Rivers State government until it addresses its non-compliance with previous court orders.

The court, led by Justice Emmanuel Akomaye, also dismissed Governor Fubara’s appeal challenging the legitimacy of the House of Assembly under Speaker Amaewhule, ordering that Amaewhule resume his duties with the other elected members of the Assembly.
