The Office of the Accountant General of the Federation (OAGF) has confirmed that some federal employees received salary overpayments in December 2024 due to a system error.
These overpayments are now being recovered through deductions from the affected employees’ salaries.
In a statement released on Friday, signed by the Director of Press and Public Relations, Bawa Mokwa, the OAGF clarified that there were no salary shortages in the payments made to federal workers in January and February 2025.
It explained that these amounts reflected normal salaries after various arrears paid in the last quarter of 2024 were fully accounted for.

The statement also noted that employees had received arrears for the minimum wage, as well as 25% and 35% salary increases, and wage awards between October and December 2024.
These additional payments had temporarily inflated salaries, leading some workers to mistakenly believe their January and February salaries had been reduced.
“Payment of normal salaries after exhausting the various arrears began in January 2025, which led to some workers feeling shortchanged when, in reality, it was their actual salary. A review of the current salary table will clarify this,” the statement read.
The OAGF assured that the salaries paid in January and February 2025 would remain unchanged unless there were any future adjustments by the Federal Government.
Regarding the overpayments from December 2024, the OAGF confirmed that the system error causing the excess payments had been fixed, and recovery through salary deductions was ongoing until the full amount was recovered.
The OAGF also addressed the issue of promotion arrears, explaining that the Standing Committee on Promotion and Salary Arrears in the Budget Office of the Federation oversees the process.
This committee vets the arrears from Ministries, Departments, and Agencies before sending them to the Integrated Payroll and Personnel Information System for payment.
According to the OAGF, batches 1 to 6 of the promotion arrears payments have been completed, and further payments are awaiting approval from the Budget Office.
Reaffirming its commitment to efficient payroll management, the OAGF encouraged workers with valid salary concerns to follow official channels for resolution and urged those affected to report their issues promptly.
