Rivers Assembly Issues Arrest Warrant For Chairman Of State Independent Electoral Commission

The Rivers State House of Assembly has issued an arrest warrant for Justice Adolphus Enebeli (rtd), the Chairman of the Rivers State Independent Electoral Commission (RSIEC), to appear before the Assembly.

The warrant was issued on Monday during plenary by the Martins Amaewhule-led Assembly, after the expiration of a 72-hour ultimatum for Enebeli to attend the session.

Enebeli had scheduled a new Local Government (LG) election for August 9, 2025, following the Supreme Court’s annulment of the October 5, 2024 local government election in the state.

The Amaewhule-led Assembly had previously vowed to investigate Enebeli’s actions regarding the annulled LG election.

Over the weekend, Rivers State Governor Siminalayi Fubara invited the Assembly members to discuss the implementation of the Supreme Court’s ruling.

The Supreme Court had also prohibited the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN), the Accountant General of the Federation, and other agencies from releasing funds to Rivers State until it complies with the court’s orders, which it deemed to have been flagrantly ignored.

In the judgment delivered by Justice Emmanuel Akomaye, the five-member panel of the court unanimously dismissed the cross-appeal filed by Governor Fubara, which challenged the legitimacy of the House of Assembly led by Speaker Amaewhule.

The court also ordered Amaewhule to immediately resume his duties with the other elected members of the Rivers State House of Assembly.
