On Thursday, Governor Siminalayi Fubara urged members of the Rivers State House of Assembly to prioritize the interests of the state’s residents and adopt a peaceful approach to resolving the ongoing political deadlock in the South-South state.
“It is important at this stage that we all embrace peace,” Fubara said when he commissioned some projects in the Okrika Local Government Area of the state.
The governor emphasized the importance of peace for effective governance and urged all discontented political figures in the state to move past past events and focus on fully implementing the decisions handed down by the Supreme Court on February 28, 2025.

“The Supreme Court has made its judgment, we don’t have any option but to abide by it, and by the special grace of God, we have started the process.
“We are appealing to other parties: consider the interest of Rivers State. The only thing that we owe this state is peace and development.
“I am open any day, any time for total peace in our state because if I have to govern well, there is the need for peace,” the governor said.
The long-standing dispute between the Wike-backed House of Assembly and Governor Fubara shows no signs of resolution, as the governor was denied access to the Assembly Quarters on Wednesday when he arrived to re-present the 2025 state budget, as required by the House following the Supreme Court’s February 28, 2025 ruling.
Fubara stated that he had informed Speaker Martins Amaewhule about his visit, but the Assembly claimed it had received no such communication.
Amidst the ongoing drama in the South-South state on Wednesday, Fubara’s former ally and predecessor, Nyesom Wike, remarked during a media chat in Abuja that there would be no issue if lawmakers chose to impeach Fubara for alleged offenses, including withholding their salaries for months.
In its ruling, the Supreme Court recognized Amaewhule as the legitimate Speaker of the House and prohibited the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) and other entities from releasing funds to the Rivers State Government until it complies with court orders, which the court deemed were being flagrantly ignored.
The court also invalidated the local government election held in the state on October 5, 2024, and directed the governor to conduct a new election, as well as re-present the 2025 Budget to the Amaewhule-led House.
