Bill To Remove Immunity Enjoyed By Vice President, Governors Scales Second Reading

The House of Representatives has advanced 42 constitutional amendment bills to the second reading stage on Wednesday.

Notably, one of these bills proposes the removal of immunity from prosecution for the vice president, governors, and their deputies, aiming to combat corruption and promote accountability.

This follows the 39 bills that passed their second reading in the House on Tuesday.

Key proposals that advanced on Wednesday include:

  • A bill to modify presidential immunity and eliminate immunity for vice presidents, governors, and their deputies.
  • A bill to separate the offices of the Attorney-General of the Federation and Attorney-General of a state from the offices of the Minister of Justice and Commissioner for Justice.
  • A bill to grant citizenship rights to spouses of Nigerian women and establish minimum youth and women representation in certain public offices.
  • Bills proposing the creation of new states: Ijebu State, Ife-Ijesa State, Tiga State, Orlu State, and Etiti State.

These bills were not debated, and their advancement brings the total number of constitutional amendment bills that have passed the second reading to 81.
