Saudi Arabia Declares Sunday As Eid al-Fitr

Saudi Arabia, the location of Islam’s holiest sites, has declared that Eid al-Fitr, the holiday marking the end of Ramadan, will commence on Sunday, March 30, 2025.

“The Supreme Court has decided that tomorrow, Sunday, March 30, 2025, is the first day of Eid al-Fitr,” the Royal Court stated in a release carried by the Saudi Press Agency on X (formerly Twitter).

The date of Eid al-Fitr is determined by the sighting of the new crescent moon, following the Muslim lunar calendar.

The United Arab Emirates and Qatar have also announced that Sunday will mark the beginning of the holiday.

However, Oman and Shiite-majority Iran have indicated that Eid al-Fitr will begin on Monday.

During Ramadan, practicing Muslims abstain from food and drink from sunrise to sunset and traditionally gather with family and friends to break their fast in the evening.4

Fasting is widely observed in Saudi Arabia, which houses the Grand Mosque in Mecca and the Prophet’s Mosque in Medina.

This year, Ramadan festivities across the Muslim world were impacted by the ongoing Israeli-Palestinian conflict, specifically the resumption of hostilities in Gaza.
