Tinubu Thrown Into Mourning As Diamond Bank Founder Pascal Dozie Dies

Pascal Dozie, the founder of the now-defunct Diamond Bank Plc, has passed away today, Tuesday, April 8, 2025, at the age of 85, just one day before his 86th birthday.

Born on April 9, 1939, in Egbu, Owerri, Imo State, Dozie established Diamond Bank, which later merged with Access Bank.

President Bola Tinubu has expressed his deepest condolences to the Dozie family, the business community, and all Nigerians on the death of the respected elder statesman, entrepreneur, and banker.

The President acknowledged Dozie’s significant vision and contributions to Nigeria’s economic framework, recognizing them as a lasting legacy.

Presidential spokesman Bayo Onanuga highlighted Dozie’s pioneering roles as the founder of Diamond Bank and the initial Chairman of MTN Nigeria, placing him at the forefront of Nigeria’s transformative journey in both banking and telecommunications.

Tinubu praised Dozie as “an exceptional business leader whose wisdom, humility, and groundbreaking work created a base for continued growth. His death is a significant loss for the private sector and Nigeria.”

The President conveyed his sympathy to Dozie’s wife, children, and extended family, urging the Nigerian private sector to honor his memory by upholding the principles of integrity, innovation, and nation-building that he championed.

“Chief Dozie, a firm believer in Nigeria’s immense potential, played a crucial role in shaping the financial services industry and expanding mobile connectivity across the nation. His influential leadership extended far beyond corporate boardrooms,” the statement noted.

“Beyond his business achievements, Chief Dozie also served as a former director at the Central Bank of Nigeria, President of the Nigerian Stock Exchange, and Chairman of the Nigerian Economic Summit Group, dedicating decades to national policy development, private sector growth, and youth empowerment,” it concluded.
