Obi, Otti Storm INEC Headquarters, Make Demand

On Wednesday, key figures from the opposition Labour Party (LP), including its 2023 presidential candidate, Peter Obi, and Abia State Governor, Alex Otti, led a protest march to the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) headquarters in Abuja.

They were received by INEC National Commissioner, Sam Olumekun.

The LP leaders demanded that INEC officially recognize Nenadi Usman as the party’s chairman, following a recent Supreme Court ruling.

This demand comes after the Supreme Court overturned a Court of Appeal judgment that had recognized Julius Abure as the LP’s National Chairman.

Last week, in a unanimous decision, a five-member Supreme Court panel ruled that the Court of Appeal had overstepped its jurisdiction by declaring Abure as the LP’s National Chairman, as the core issue of the case pertained to the party’s internal leadership.

The Supreme Court upheld the appeal filed by Senator Ester Usman and another party member, deeming it valid, while simultaneously dismissing the cross-appeal filed by the Abure faction of the LP as groundless.
