US Deports Former Governor

The United States has deported to Mexico a former governor of the violence-ridden border state of Tamaulipas, Tomas Yarrington, after he served time for money laundering in Texas, according to Mexican authorities on Wednesday.

Yarrington, who governed Tamaulipas from 1999 to 2005, had been serving a nine-year prison sentence in the US.

He was initially apprehended in Italy in 2017 at the joint request of American and Mexican authorities.

He was convicted of accepting $3.5 million in bribes during his governorship and subsequently laundering these funds in the US through the purchase of luxury properties.

A federal source in Mexico indicated to AFP that Yarrington is currently being held in a high-security prison near the Mexican capital. The source requested anonymity due to a lack of authorization to speak on the matter.

While authorities have not yet specified the exact crimes Yarrington may face in Mexico, he had been previously accused in 2009 of alleged connections to drug trafficking and money laundering.
