WhatsApp will discontinue support for certain older mobile phones starting May 5, 2025, meaning users with these devices will lose access to the messaging service.
This decision is part of Meta’s continuous efforts to enhance security and ensure the app runs optimally on newer devices and operating systems.
Both the standard WhatsApp and WhatsApp Business apps, which share the same system requirements, will be affected by this change.
Meta states that this move is essential for the app to maintain efficient and secure operation on the latest technology.
However, only a small group of users, mainly those with smartphones older than ten years, will be impacted.
iPhone Models Losing Support
WhatsApp will stop working on iOS versions prior to 15.1. Consequently, the following Apple devices will no longer be compatible with the app:
- iPhone 5s
- iPhone 6
- iPhone 6 Plus
While some older iPhone models can be updated to newer iOS versions, the models listed above are limited to iOS 12.5.7, which does not meet the new minimum requirement.
The iPhone 5s, iPhone 6, and iPhone 6 Plus were launched in 2013 and 2014.
Android Devices Already Dropped in January 2025
Earlier this year, on January 1, 2025, WhatsApp also ended support for Android KitKat (version 4.4) and earlier.
Some devices running KitKat might still run the app if users can update their operating systems. However, for phones that no longer receive updates from the manufacturer, this might not be possible without using unofficial and potentially risky methods.
The following Android models became incompatible with WhatsApp on January 1, 2025:

- Xperia Z

- Xperia V
