Why North Was Silent During Buhari’s Presidency – Shehu Sani

Former Kaduna Central Senator Shehu Sani has argued that the silence of Northern Nigerians during former President Muhammadu Buhari’s administration was largely due to a culture of nepotism and favoritism.

He made this assertion during an appearance on Channels Television’s “Politics Today” program on Thursday.

Sani highlighted that numerous key appointments were concentrated among individuals from Katsina State, Buhari’s home state.

These included the Director-General of the State Security Service (SSS), the Director-General of the National Intelligence Agency (NIA), and various other significant positions.

He also pointed out that appointments within the military and paramilitary sectors heavily favored the northern region, citing examples such as the Controller General of Immigration, Comptroller General of Customs, Commandant General of Civil Defense, and Chairman of the Federal Road Safety Corps, among others.

“The DG of SSS, Daura was from Katsina state, the DG of NIA, Rufai was from Katsina state, the MPA, my sister Hadiza, she’s from Katsina state, Director of Federal Mortgage Bank, Katsina state, SMEDAN, Katsina state, FRCN Katsina state, NIMET Katsina state, NIMASA Katsina state, Railway Corporation, Katsina state, all those things, you don’t talk of Chairman of federal civil service about 30 (of them) We don’t have time, I can state all of them. All from Katsina state,” he stated.

Sani contended that these appointments were not challenged by Northern Nigerians because they were beneficiaries of the system.

He contrasted this with the present situation, where Southern Nigerians are vocal in their criticism of perceived lopsided appointments by President Bola Tinubu, implying that had the roles been reversed, Northerners would have been equally vocal in their opposition.
