FG Announces Closure Of Popular International Airport

The Federal Government has announced the temporary closure of the Akanu Ibiam International Airport in Enugu State.

This was disclosed in a statement on Saturday morning by Obiageli Orah, the Director of Public Affairs and Consumer Protection at the Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN).

Orah stated that the airport has been closed to allow for urgent repairs to a damaged section of the runway.

“There is a sudden and significant rupture in the asphalt surface at a critical section of the runway. Hence, emergency repairs will be conducted on that portion of the runway from April 22nd to May 6th, 2025,” she explained.

Orah added that FAAN has closed the runway in accordance with Nigerian civil aviation regulations.

“In compliance with Nigerian civil aviation regulations, the Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN) has, therefore, closed the runway during this period,” she said.

Orah noted that this action is part of FAAN’s commitment to ensuring passenger safety and upgrading airport facilities.

“As part of FAAN’s commitment to passenger safety and the modernisation of airport facilities, the runway will not be open for landings or takeoffs during the rehabilitation period,” she stated.

She also appealed to all travelers and airport users for their patience during the repair period, stating, “FAAN appeals to all airport users and stakeholders for their understanding and cooperation during this time. All flights to this airport will be diverted to nearby airports. We sincerely apologise for the late and unexpected notice regarding this closure.”

Earlier, Air Peace had suspended all flights scheduled to the Akanu Ibiam International Airport in Enugu State, citing concerns over the deteriorating airport infrastructure and its impact on safety.
