NLC Shuts Down Wike’s Office, Demands N70,000 Minimum Wage For Area Council Workers

The Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) on Thursday held a heated protest at the office of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Minister, Nyesom Wike, demanding the swift implementation of the N70,000 minimum wage for workers in the six Area Councils of the FCT.

Hundreds of demonstrators, including teachers and healthcare workers, marched from Labour House in Abuja’s Central Area to the Minister’s office in Area 11.

Holding placards and chanting protest and solidarity songs, they condemned what they described as the FCT Administration’s deliberate disregard for their welfare.

Tensions escalated when security personnel locked the main entrance to the Minister’s office, preventing the protesters from entering.

In retaliation, the crowd blocked access to and from the building, insisting they would not leave unless Wike addressed them in person.

When Mandate Secretary Lawrence Garki attempted to calm the situation, he was met with boos and chants of “thief, thief!” as the crowd rejected his presence and stood firm on their demand to see only the Minister.

“We will not leave here until Wike comes out,” one protester shouted. “We are tired of the lies and delay. Our people are suffering while the government continues to ignore us.”

The demonstrators also demanded the resignation or dismissal of the six Area Council chairmen, accusing them of failing to prioritize the welfare of workers.

At the heart of their protest was the non-implementation of the N70,000 minimum wage, which they said had already been agreed upon but ignored by the FCT authorities.

As of the time of this report, the protest was still ongoing, with no official word yet from Minister Wike or the FCT Administration.
