Bayelsa Government Makes Demand After Shooting At Pro-Wike Rally

The Bayelsa State Government has demanded a thorough investigation into the shooting incident that disrupted a political rally organized by the pro-Wike group, the New Associates, in Yenagoa on Saturday.

Gunshots were fired shortly before the rally was set to begin, raising concerns about public safety and political tensions in the state.

Although the event eventually proceeded under heightened security, the government has strongly condemned the violence.

In a statement released late Saturday, the Commissioner for Information, Orientation, and Strategy, Ebiowou Koku-Obiyai, called on security agencies, particularly the Inspector-General of Police and the Bayelsa State Police Command, to promptly identify and prosecute those responsible for the shooting.

“The Bayelsa State Government strongly condemns the act of violence witnessed during the rally. We call on law enforcement agencies to immediately launch an investigation and bring to justice anyone involved,” the statement read.

The government described the shooting as “unfortunate and avoidable,” noting that the rally organizers had earlier hinted at potential disruptive elements by stating that “the good, the bad, and the ugly” would be present at the event.

Furthermore, the government criticized the use of a religious campground for political activities, asserting that this violated established guidelines under the Electoral Act and INEC regulations.

They warned political groups against involving religious institutions in partisan conflicts and vowed to sanction any organization found to be in breach of the law.

Reaffirming its commitment to maintaining peace and stability in the state, the Bayelsa government assured residents of its dedication to protecting lives and property while upholding the rule of law.
