Former Labour Party presidential spokesperson, Kenneth Okonkwo, has asserted that a coalition is the opposition’s sole opportunity to defeat President Bola Tinubu and the All Progressives Congress (APC) in the 2027 elections.
Speaking on Channels Television’s “Sunday Politics,” Okonkwo expressed confidence in the formation of such a coalition, though he did not specify who would lead it.
“Moving to 2027, I know that there will be a coalition. Whether it is going to be between Peter Obi and Atiku, I don’t know, but there will be a coalition. Why? Because that will be the only choice the opposition has to make any impact,” Okonkwo stated.

When asked if the absence of a coalition would render Tinubu unbeatable, Okonkwo replied, “Outrightly, he will just walk into it.”
He argued that no single candidate can defeat Tinubu in 2027, emphasizing that “in Nigeria, we have entered into the unfortunacy that you will not only win but you have to secure your victory.”
He further stated that if the elites unite, as they did in 2014 to challenge Goodluck Jonathan in 2015, they could unseat Tinubu in 2027.
Addressing the recent defections of opposition party members to the APC, Okonkwo attributed these moves to the belief that the APC will manipulate election results in their favor in 2027.
He described it as absurd for people to seek shelter in a “sinking house.”
Okonkwo reiterated his resignation from the Labour Party, clarifying that he has not joined any other political party. He explained that he prefers to analyze situations before making his next move.
However, he emphasized that his immediate focus is on advocating for a coalition of all opposition political parties.
