Why No Single Candidate Can Defeat Tinubu In 2027 – Kenneth Okonkwo

Former Labour Party (LP) chieftain, Kenneth Okonkwo, has stated that a coalition is the only way to defeat President Bola Tinubu in the 2027 election.

Okonkwo, who served as the LP presidential campaign spokesperson for the 2023 election, believes that no individual candidate can challenge President Tinubu in the next election cycle.

“No one single candidate can beat Tinubu alone, by whatever name they are called. The reason is this. In Nigeria, we have entered into the unfortunacy that you will not only win, but you have to secure your victory. So you need the elites to secure your victory, even if the people vote for you,” Okonkwo said on Channels Television’s “Sunday Politics.”

“So if the elites come together, like they did in 2014 to confront Jonathan, in 2015, they were able to secure their victory when the people voted for them.”

When asked if a failure to form a coalition would guarantee Tinubu’s victory, he responded, “Outrightly, he will just walk into it.”

“Moving to 2027, I know that there will be a coalition. Whether it is going to be between Peter Obi and Atiku, I don’t know, but there will be a coalition. Why? Because that will be the only choice the opposition has to make any impact,” the actor-turned-politician said.

His comments come amidst discussions of a coalition led by former Kaduna State Governor, Nasir El-Rufai, and former Vice President Atiku Abubakar.

Recently, opposition parties have experienced a wave of defections, with Delta State Governor Sheriff Oborevwori, his predecessor Ifeanyi Okowa, and the entire PDP structure in Delta State joining the All Progressives Congress (APC).

Oborevwori and his team are scheduled to be officially welcomed into the APC in Asaba on Monday.
