Okowa Replies Saraki

Former Delta State Governor, Senator Ifeanyi Okowa, has criticized Senator Bukola Saraki’s comments regarding his recent defection to the All Progressives Congress (APC), stating that Saraki lacks the moral authority to judge his decision.

On Monday, Okowa, along with Delta State Governor Sheriff Oborevwori and other key political figures, officially joined the APC.

Saraki responded with a strongly worded statement, describing Okowa’s move as “unprecedented” and a sign of the “low” state of Nigerian politics, especially considering Okowa’s role as the PDP’s vice-presidential candidate in the 2023 election.

In an interview on Arise Television’s “The Morning Show” on Tuesday, Okowa countered Saraki’s criticism, arguing that Saraki himself had previously defected from the PDP to the APC and later returned.

“I did not expect that someone like Senator Bukola Saraki should be able to speak concerning me, because he knows that he had also moved to APC before and eventually return. So he has had movement to and fro. So, I don’t think that he has the moral right to even speak about my defection at all,” Okowa said.

Okowa emphasized that the decision to defect was a collective one made by all political stakeholders in Delta State, driven by the ongoing crisis within the PDP.

He stated that recent communications from the PDP leadership indicated that the party was not a suitable political vehicle for Delta State heading into the 2027 elections.

He added that the PDP governors’ rejection of a coalition, combined with the party’s internal leadership struggles, suggested that the opposition party was not prepared for the 2027 elections.

“Several things have been going on in the party. While I do not want to join issues with people, as stakeholders, our leaders in this state have sat down to look at the events in the last several months, and because of the events that we see and the communications coming out from the leadership of the PDP at the moment, it did not appear to us that that was a proper political vehicle for us to continue in,” Okowa stated.
