EFCC Releases E-Money On Bail

The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has granted bail to popular socialite Emeka Okonkwo, widely known as E-Money.

An anonymous source within the commission revealed his release on Wednesday, stating that he will be charged in court soon.

E-Money was apprehended on Tuesday in the Omole area of Lagos State on allegations of naira abuse, specifically for allegedly spraying naira and US dollar bills at a public event.

This act is considered an offense under Nigeria’s Foreign Exchange (Monitoring and Miscellaneous Provisions) Act.

His detention involved being taken to the EFCC’s custody in Abuja.

In a related development, the EFCC also arrested another socialite, Aisha Achimugu, at the Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport in Abuja around 5 am on Tuesday upon her return from London.

Achimugu had been declared wanted by the anti-graft agency in March for alleged criminal conspiracy and money laundering.

Her lawyer, Chikaosolu Ojukwu (SAN), confirmed the arrest and criticized the EFCC’s action as a violation of a court order, stating that Achimugu had returned voluntarily based on an undertaking to honor the EFCC’s invitation.

Ojukwu also disclosed that Achimugu has begun a hunger strike to protest what he believes is a breach of her fundamental rights, calling her a “prisoner of conscience.”

Her arrest occurred a day after a Federal High Court in Abuja ordered her to appear before the EFCC and the court.
