Former Military Governor Paul Omu Dies At 85

Elder statesman and retired Major General Paul Omu, who served as the Military Governor of the now-defunct South-Eastern State (comprising present-day Cross River and Akwa Ibom States) between July 1975 and July 1978, has passed away at the age of 85.

A statement released by his family on Wednesday, April 30, 2025, confirmed that General Omu, a native of Igbide in the Isoko South Local Government Area of Delta State, died on April 29, 2025.

The family, through Oghenekome Ufuoma Omu, indicated that burial arrangements would be announced later.

The statement described Major-General Omu as a devoted family man, patriot, statesman, soldier, and community leader who dedicated his life to serving Nigeria and his Isoko community.

A distinguished military officer, he rose through the ranks of the Nigerian Army, holding various significant command and administrative roles.

His tenure as Military Governor of the South-Eastern State saw the initiation and implementation of crucial infrastructural and policy reforms.

In 1985, General Omu was appointed Commander of the Command and Staff College and also served as a member of the Armed Forces Ruling Council.

He played a vital role in Nigeria’s transition to democracy, chairing the Constitutional Conference Commission in 1994.

In 2009, he was appointed Chairman of the Governing Board of the National Institute of Policy and Strategic Studies (NIPSS).

Beyond his national service, General Omu was deeply involved in the development of his Isoko community, serving as President of the Isoko Development Union (IDU) from 2014 to 2015, where he championed unity, education, and economic progress.

Major-General Omu is survived by his wife, Senator Stella Omu, six children, siblings, and numerous grandchildren.
