Dele Momodu, publisher of Ovation magazine and a prominent figure in the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), has alleged that Nyesom Wike, the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), was responsible for Peter Obi’s departure from the PDP.
Obi, who was a PDP member, left the party for the Labour Party (LP) during the lead-up to the 2023 general election, where he became the party’s presidential candidate.
In an interview on Arise Television on Wednesday, Momodu asserted that Wike’s actions directly led to Obi’s exit.
Momodu explained that before the 2023 election, Atiku Abubakar, the PDP’s presidential candidate, had preferred the party to zone its presidential ticket to the Southeast region, rather than maintaining a rotation within a limited number of regions.

He implied that Wike could have benefited from Atiku’s proposal had he not distanced himself from the Southeast.
Momodu alleged that Wike disqualified himself by stating he was not Igbo and that he had no interest in an Igbo agenda.
Given the PDP’s consideration of zoning the presidential ticket to the Southeast, Momodu accused Wike of deliberately frustrating Obi out of the party to clear his own path to becoming the PDP’s presidential candidate.
Momodu said, “It was the same Wike people complaining about north-south that brought the committee that threw our party primary open. That’s why I was able to buy a form. I bought a form because, at that time, Atiku had told them that if they ceded power to the southeast, then it would make sense to him, but if it would still be a rotation between just a few zones, he would not support it. He wanted them to cede power to the southeast. But because Wike had already disqualified himself by saying he’s not an Igbo man, he said he’s from south-south, he’s not interested in Igbo anything, so he succeeded in frustrating Peter Obi out of the party. So, the coast was clear for Nyesom Wike.”
Dele Momodu further elaborated that the PDP did not have an issue with zoning until Nyesom Wike and his allies within the party began using it to advocate for a north-south rotation of the presidential ticket.
