The Presidency has denounced as untrue and harmful a widely circulated report alleging that President Bola Tinubu has dismissed the Ministers of Defence and Power, demanding immediate action against those spreading the false information.
The report, initially published by Phoenix Browser with the headline ‘BREAKING: Tinubu Sacks Ministers of Defence and Power’, was quickly refuted by official sources as entirely fabricated and misleading.
Responding to the report, the Special Adviser to the President on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, used his X (formerly Twitter) account late Tuesday night to condemn the increase in fake news and urged security agencies to take strong measures against those responsible for such falsehoods.

“Security agencies must urgently take action against fake news websites and platforms and the purveyors who fail to check the authenticity of the stories and make them go viral,” Onanuga stated.
He cautioned that the unchecked creation of false stories under the guise of press freedom poses a significant threat to democracy and social unity.
“Press freedom and freedom of speech will not exist when some people can wake up and concoct their news and narratives without regard for truth. Fake news is simply licentiousness and must be criminalised,” Onanuga added.
