Adeleke Speaks On Defecting To APC

Osun State Governor Ademola Adeleke has firmly denied any plans to leave the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) amid rumors of a potential defection to the All Progressives Congress (APC).

Adeleke, who is speculated to be considering a re-election bid in the upcoming governorship election, addressed these rumors during a closed-door meeting with PDP stakeholders in Osogbo.

He labeled the defection speculations as “fake news” spread by those intimidated by his administration’s performance.

“My people, party elders and chiefs, I declare before you today that I am not defecting to APC or any other political party. I remain in PDP,” Adeleke stated.

The meeting was attended by prominent PDP figures, including former Governor Olagunsoye Oyinlola (virtually), PDP state chairman Sunday Bisi, House Speaker Adewale Egbedun, and former Deputy Speaker of the House of Representatives Lasun Yusuf.

Adeleke has been a PDP member since 2017, when he replaced his late brother Isiaka Adeleke as Osun West senator.

He later contested and won the governorship in 2022, defeating then-incumbent Adegboyega Oyetola.

The rumors of Adeleke’s potential defection arose amidst a wave of PDP members joining the APC, including Delta State Governor Sheriff Oborevwori and his predecessor Ifeanyi Okowa.

These defections have been attributed to internal PDP conflicts and the APC’s perceived strength.

The PDP has accused the APC of using state resources and intimidation to lure members, while the APC attributes the defections to its effective governance and President Tinubu’s agenda.

The Osun PDP stakeholders’ forum passed a vote of confidence in Adeleke’s leadership, endorsing him for a second term and praising his commitment to the party.

They also expressed optimism that the PDP’s national leadership is working to resolve internal issues.
