Why I Won’t Work For Tinubu’s Government Again – Hakeem Baba-Ahmed

Hakeem Baba-Ahmed, former Special Adviser on Political Matters to President Bola Tinubu, has stated that while he doesn’t regret his time working with the President, he would decline a similar opportunity if offered again.

Baba-Ahmed, who resigned from his position in April, explained on Channels Television’s “Politics Today” on Thursday that his decision stemmed from his perception that the Tinubu administration lacked the necessary drive to address Nigeria’s pressing issues.

He clarified that he has no regrets about accepting the initial appointment, but when asked if he would do it again, he responded negatively, citing the current direction of the Tinubu government.

“I got out because there was no space, I didn’t see that fire, that commitment, zeal to fix the country that has been wrecked. I saw instead a country that is just getting worse,” he said.

The former presidential adviser expressed that he could not continue to serve a government that, in his view, had lost its mandate to bring about change, particularly in tackling poverty and insecurity in the North, which he believes have deteriorated under Tinubu’s leadership.

He revealed that he declined a personal meeting with the President, as he felt he would have to convey unwelcome truths, including advising against a second term in 2027.

He suggested that Tinubu should instead support a younger, more dynamic candidate from within his party for the 2027 presidential election.

Baba-Ahmed lamented that despite his appointment as a political advisor, he was unable to contribute meaningfully in that capacity.

“No, I didn’t do any job. I was supposed to be an adviser on political matters to the President in the office of the Vice President, but I didn’t do any advising,” he said.

Regarding the North’s stance on Tinubu, Baba-Ahmed said that the region simply wants the President to address its problems, including insecurity, poverty, unemployment, and drug issues.
