Donald Trump posted a digitally altered image of himself dressed as the Pope on his Truth Social platform on Friday, following his joke about wanting to become the next Catholic pontiff.
The image, which appears to be AI-generated, shows Trump wearing papal attire, including white robes, a gold crucifix, and a mitre hat, with his finger pointed upwards.
This post came after Trump jokingly told reporters he would like to be the next Pope, just days before the cardinals are set to convene to elect a successor to Pope Francis, who died on April 21.
When asked who he would prefer to succeed Pope Francis, Trump stated, “I’d like to be pope, that would be my number one choice.”
He mentioned that he didn’t have a specific preference but noted a “very good” cardinal in New York, likely referring to Archbishop Timothy Dolan, who holds conservative theological views and opposes abortion.
Trump attended Pope Francis’s funeral last week, marking his first foreign trip since regaining power.
Approximately 20% of Americans identify as Catholic, and exit polls from November indicated that around 60% of them voted for Trump.
Pope Francis had been a significant moral voice on the global stage and was critical of Trump, particularly during his 2016 presidential campaign.
Francis famously criticized Trump’s plan to build a border wall with Mexico, stating, “Anyone, whoever he is, who only wants to build walls and not bridges is not a Christian.”
Cardinals are scheduled to gather on May 7 in the Vatican’s Sistine Chapel to elect a new Pope.
