Bayern Munich have clinched their 34th German league title, and Harry Kane’s first major trophy, after Bayer Leverkusen, the only team that could mathematically catch them, drew 2-2 with Freiburg on Sunday.
Bayern’s own 3-3 draw against RB Leipzig on Saturday meant Leverkusen needed a win to delay Bayern’s celebrations.
However, despite coming back from two goals down to draw 2-2 in the final minutes, Leverkusen couldn’t find the decisive third goal.
Xabi Alonso, Leverkusen’s coach and a former Bayern player, acknowledged Bayern’s deserved victory, stating they were the more consistent team throughout the season.
Harry Kane, who had never won a major trophy before, watched the Leverkusen game with his Bayern teammates in Munich.
He was suspended for Bayern’s match against Leipzig but is set to return for their home game against Borussia Mönchengladbach, where they will receive the Bundesliga trophy.
Leverkusen’s draw leaves them eight points behind Bayern with only two games remaining, making it impossible to retain the title they won last season, ending Bayern’s 11-year dominance.
Freiburg took a 2-0 lead with goals from Maximilian Eggestein and an own goal by Leverkusen’s Piero Hincapie.
However, late goals from Florian Wirtz and Jonathan Tah secured a draw for Leverkusen.
With their title hopes dashed, Leverkusen’s focus will likely shift to retaining key players like Alonso and Wirtz, who have been linked with moves elsewhere. Tah has already confirmed his departure at the end of the season.
The draw extended Leverkusen’s unbeaten away record to 33 games, equaling a Bundesliga record held by Bayern.
The result also keeps Freiburg in fourth place, one point ahead of Borussia Dortmund in the final Champions League spot.
In other Bundesliga matches on Sunday, Holstein Kiel kept their relegation survival hopes alive with a 3-1 win over Augsburg, while Eintracht Frankfurt played Mainz in the late game, with Champions League qualification at stake.
