In a televised interview airing Sunday, the US President stated that he is unsure whether he is obligated to uphold the US Constitution.
He also indicated that he is not seriously considering running for a third White House term, despite previously hinting at the idea, which is explicitly prohibited by the nation’s foundational legal document.
“I don’t know,” the President replied when directly asked by the host of NBC News “Meet the Press with Kristen Welker” if he believes he must uphold the supreme law of the land.

When specifically questioned whether American citizens and non-citizens alike are entitled to due process, as stated in the US Constitution, the President said, “I’m not a lawyer. I don’t know.”
The President’s aggressive actions to deport undocumented migrants — some without court hearings — have faced widespread criticism, but he maintains it is necessary due to what he has declared a “national emergency.”
The suggestion of potentially seeking a third term has been strongly questioned by legal and constitutional experts. The 22nd Amendment to the Constitution limits presidents to two terms.
However, the President stated in March that he was “not joking” about seeking a third term, suggesting without detail that there are “methods” to make it happen.
Amending the Constitution to allow a third term would be a significant undertaking, requiring a two-thirds majority in both houses of Congress and ratification by at least 38 state legislatures.
But “this is not something I’m looking to do,” the President told NBC’s Welker, adding, “I’m looking to have four great years and turn it over to somebody, ideally a great Republican, a great Republican to carry it forward.”
When asked about potential successors, he mentioned Vice President JD Vance — calling him a “fantastic, brilliant guy” — and Secretary of State Marco Rubio, while noting that “we have a lot of good people in this party.”
