Jonathan Issues Warning Over Attempt To Create One-Party State

Former President Goodluck Jonathan cautioned against the establishment of a one-party state on Wednesday, emphasizing that any nation pursuing such a system must do so with careful planning and a clearly defined process and desired outcome.

He made this statement in Abuja during a memorial lecture and tribute event for the late elder statesman, Edwin Clark.

Jonathan warned that attempting to create a one-party state through political manipulation for personal gain would harm the country.

The former president also encouraged the Clark family to establish an annual memorial lecture to perpetuate his ideals and vision for a united, equitable, and prosperous Nigeria.

Meanwhile, Peter Obi, the Labour Party’s presidential candidate in the 2023 elections, expressed concern that the efforts of Nigeria’s past heroes were being undermined.

The former Anambra State governor highlighted the widespread poverty in rural areas, the prevailing insecurity, and the escalating cost of living.

He argued that the sacrifices made by figures like Pa Edwin Clark had not yielded the desired results.

General Yakubu Gowon, the chairman of the event and former Head of State, stressed the collective responsibility of all Nigerians to ensure the nation’s unity and indivisibility.

He emphasized that progress could only be achieved when national interests superseded personal ones.
