ASUU Elects New President

The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) has elected Prof. Chris Piwuna, a consultant psychiatrist from the University of Jos Teaching Hospital and the Dean of Student Affairs at the University of Jos, as its new president.

Piwuna will succeed Victor Osodeke, a Professor of Soil Science from the Michael Okpara University of Agriculture, Umudike, Abia State.

This decision was made at the 23rd National Delegates Congress of the Union, held in Benin on Sunday.

Sources familiar with the matter confirmed that Piwuna contested the election against Prof. Adamu Babayo of the Abubakar Tafawa Balewa University, Bauchi.

Piwuna is assuming office at a time when there are widespread speculations about potential industrial action due to issues such as the sharing formula of the Earned Academic Allowances recently released by the Federal Government, and the ongoing problem of brain drain in Nigerian universities.
