A 400-level student of Kwararafa University, Wukari, Taraba State, Ahenjir Emmanuella, was allegedly killed by a stray bullet fired by a police officer during a stop-and-search operation in Makurdi, Benue State.
The incident reportedly occurred around 8 am on Friday at the Wurukum roundabout, where officers of the Benue State Police Command were conducting routine checks.
Eyewitnesses stated that an officer suddenly opened fire on a commercial vehicle carrying passengers, including Emmanuella, who was fatally struck by a bullet that penetrated the bus.

Emmanuella was said to be on her way back to school when the tragic event occurred.
Igbor Iorbo, a close friend of the deceased, described the incident as devastating and demanded justice, telling journalists in Makurdi, “In the early hours of today, officers from ‘E’ Division shot and killed my friend, Emmanuella. We are not asking for much, just justice. The officers involved must be identified and subjected to a transparent investigation. Lives must not continue to be lost at the hands of those meant to protect us. This must stop.”
Human rights and gender activist, Ukan Kurugh, also condemned the incident and criticized the police authorities’ silence.
He threatened a major peaceful protest in Makurdi if the alleged perpetrator is not identified by the end of the weekend.
He expressed disappointment that the police had not addressed the matter since it happened early Friday.
