New ‘Shekau’ Resurfaces, Issues Threats To CDS, Soldiers, Muslim Clerics

A self-proclaimed Boko Haram commander, referring to himself as the new “Shekau,” has issued severe threats against Nigeria’s Chief of Defence Staff (CDS), Christopher Musa, along with Muslim clerics, security personnel, and communities assisting the government’s counter-insurgency efforts.

This outburst appears to be a direct response to an earlier warning by General Musa, delivered in Hausa, that terrorists would either surrender or face complete eradication by Nigerian troops.

In a recently released video, translated from Hausa by PRNigeria, the insurgent delivered a chilling message to General Musa, urging him and the Nigerian Armed Forces to cease their operations against the group.

He asserted that, like his predecessors, Musa would fail to defeat Boko Haram. The insurgent declared, “This message is for the Chief of Defence Staff, General Christopher Musa. We call on you to repent and cease your actions, for you will not succeed against those of us fighting your government. You will face dire consequences and regret your attempts to defeat us. Peace can only be achieved by abandoning democracy and embracing a new way of life.”

He further cited the perceived failures of previous military leaders, stating: “TY Buratai came and gave it his all without success. General Attahiru and General Lagbaja also came and didn’t last long. The same fate awaits you and your men.”

The insurgent then declared war on all Nigerian soldiers, regardless of their religious affiliation, proclaiming, “Every soldier who wears the uniform to defend democracy—whether Muslim or not—is our enemy, and we will fight them with all our strength.”

The militant also attempted to entice troops to desert, depicting military service as unrewarding. “Please, repent and leave that job from which you barely feed. Come and follow us,” he urged.

Warnings were also issued to Islamic clerics who publicly denounce Boko Haram’s extreme ideology, with the insurgent accusing them of misleading the public.

“Muslim scholars who give sermons and try to confuse people by claiming we don’t follow the right religion should beware,” he said, adding, “We call on you to join us. If you refuse, know that we won’t force you—but if you defame us, we will crush you.”

Communities and traders assisting the armed forces were also threatened: “Anyone aiding the military against us will be killed. They are unbelievers because they support democracy,” the terrorist asserted.

This video has reignited concerns about Boko Haram’s propaganda and recruitment tactics, especially as the Nigerian military intensifies operations in the North-East and other volatile regions.

Security analysts view the video as a psychological warfare tactic designed to sow fear, undermine morale, and challenge the resolve of both security forces and the public in the ongoing fight against terrorism.
