The Federal University of Transportation, Daura, Katsina State, announced on Thursday its intention to send students to China, Russia, and the United Kingdom for practical studies to enhance their learning experience.
Vice-Chancellor Umar Katsayal explained during a briefing at the university in Daura that the institution is partnering with a Chinese company involved in its construction to adopt world-class learning standards.
This collaboration will see students spend three years studying theory in Nigeria, followed by two years abroad for practical training.
Katsayal noted that this “three plus two” model has already been successfully implemented, with students from Ahmadu Bello University, Zaria (civil and mechanical engineering), having completed practical programs in China in 2018 and 2019.
Many of these returning students now serve as pioneer academic staff at the Federal University of Transportation, preparing current students for similar opportunities.
While highlighting strategic collaborations with local and international transport regulatory agencies, Katsayal acknowledged that the young university faces funding challenges.
He emphasized the need for the Federal Government to provide more resources to cover rising operational and maintenance costs.
Looking ahead, the university has been approved for TETFund support, which is expected to significantly improve academic infrastructure and staff development.
The institution plans to integrate modern technology, including smart classrooms and expanded virtual learning platforms, and prioritize sustainability initiatives like solar-powered facilities and a green campus.
The university also intends to broaden its academic offerings to include programs in transportation security, aviation technology, smart transport systems, and sustainable urban mobility.
Additionally, short and executive courses will be launched for working professionals, and research efforts will be intensified in areas such as autonomous vehicles and green logistics, alongside further development of academic staff and industry partnerships.
